Xbox One X,the most powerful console…..will it succeed?
E3 2017 was an exciting couple of hours, some of my favorite announcements included Forza Motorsport 7, Bioware’s upcoming title “Anthem”, and of course: The Xbox One X. leading up to this event, All the hype for the new console had been around the prospect of it being able to run games natively in 4K, however I’m starting to see how this isn’t entirely true. The Assassins Creed Origins demo that was shown at E3 was actually running “checkerboard rendering” which effectively halves the screen resolution of the game. This was also seen in the Anthem demo which means we can probably assume that aside from first party titles, most third party games will use some rendering technique to get a more respectable frame rate. I’m not bashing on the console however, getting that much power into a box just about the size of the current Xbox One S is no small feat, and I think this may be the year that microsoft provides a good competitor to the Playstation 4 Pro.
I personally am not bothered by the fact that a good few games won’t be in true 4K, because balance is the best when it comes to resolution and frame rate. When you have a good balance between the two, that’s what makes an enjoyable experience for the user. The Xbox One X will also make existing Xbox One games run better, microsoft stated that Forza Horizon 3, Titanfall 2, and a few other games will see frame rate and resolution benefits when running on the new console as well.
A word on the price: when the $499 price tag was shown, there were mixed feelings from the media, however when you see what a similarly priced PC would be, the cost of the console is fairly warranted in my opinion, for the amount of power the Xbox One X brings to the table, I believe it is a fair price. At the end of the day it all comes down to how microsoft markets their console to the general public, they need to effectively communicate the power of the console, what amazing exclusive games will be available, and what benefits gamer’s will see from it even if they don’t own a 4K TV. If you’re looking for a cheaper but very capable console, then check out my review of the Xbox One S. Let me know your opinions in the comments below!
